Beyond Borders: Successful Conclusion of the 2023 International Tax Conference by The Asian Consulting Group

The 2023 International Tax Conference concluded with great success last Thursday, June 15. Esteemed speakers and panelists shared their expertise and engaged in insightful discussions on economic and tax issues, tax policies and digitalization in the Philippines, and good governance and ease of doing business.

Mr. Ralph van Doorn, Senior Economist of the World Bank Philippines, and Mr. Romeo Balanquit, Assistant Secretary of the Philippines’ Department of Budget and Management, delivered speeches on addressing global and local challenges in the field of economics and taxation, and how the Philippines can create a more resilient system to face those challenges.

Mr. van Doorn, in his presentation titled “Economic Outlook – Addressing High Inflation (Glance at the Philippines’ Economic Updates),” emphasized how the Philippines outperformed its regional peers, a trend projected to continue for 2023. He highlighted the importance of current reforms as crucial for safeguarding economic growth and achieving long-term development targets.

The conference also featured prominent industry leaders and experts, including Mr. Ragnar Gudmundsson from the International Monetary Fund, Mr. Aekapol Chongvilaivan from the Asian Development Bank, and Senator Win Gatchalian, who emphasized the current tax landscape and how compliance can be made easier, particularly for thriving businesses while fostering growth and sustainability.

Ms. Kirbee Tibayan from the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime shared valuable insights on the United Nations Convention Against Corruption (UNCAC) Implementation review. She discussed the country’s progress in implementing anti-corruption measures, promoting transparency, and ensuring accountability from its public officials.

The conference also featured a discussion by the Philippine Tax Whiz Mon Abrea, who provided a unique perspective on the challenges of corruption and the importance of global governance in combating this issue. Mr. Abrea, Founding Chairman and Chief Tax Advisor of Asian Consulting Group (ACG) also launched his latest book, Reimagining the World Without Corruption. The book marks the culmination of his studies at the Harvard Kennedy School, and was received enthusiastically by industry leaders and professionals.

The event concluded with a powerful closing speech by former Vice President, Atty. Leni Robredo, emphasizing the true essence of the International Tax Conference. She urged participants to reflect on the significance of taxation as an instrument for the public good. Atty. Robredo encouraged individuals to embrace their role as responsible citizens, emphasizing that change begins when we all commit to building a better nation and generation.
